So it's no secret; I hate Call of Duty with an intense, undying passion. I really just cannot stand any part of it. But this doesn't mean it's a bad game, so I decided to sit down and do a point by point review of it. I won't like it any more, but it'll be a fun experience for all of us. Or maybe just me.
Keep in mind, I have barely played any of the game. I will try not to judge things I am unfamiliar with, but...it's hard to avoid here. I will stay objective though. Let's begin.
-Graphics/Aesthetic
Okay, so a lot of the games critics get on this game for pretty much being nonstop dungy greens abd greys and browns. And they're right. And they say that this is bad design. This would also be right in nearly any other game, but let's consider something; they decided to do a realistic(ish) representation of a war in a desert. They pulled off the appearance FLAWLESSLY. It's not their fault the theme has a shitty aesthetic to work with. Even so, they COULD have done more.
4/5
-Multiplayer
The multiplayer is easy to use and works pretty well. Yes, there's hackers, and there isn't much you can do about that, but this doesn't reflect poorly on the game ITSELF.
5/5
-Mechanics
The mechanics are simplistic. You got a shitload of different ammos and weapons, too many to go into detail here. A lot of them felt the same to me, but I'm no gun buff. The item pickups were clear and placed well. The upgrade system is a little unbalanced (certain abilities seem to have much more advantages than others that are about the same level), but all in all it at least requires a little thought and you can make some unique builds to my knowledge.
4/5
-Gameplay
Shallow. Pretty much the same controls as every other generic shooter out there, with minor differences in regards to the present mechanics. I understand a genre will represent a similar, recurring control scheme, but most shooters have pretty much the exact same controls and this game barely differs from that.
1/5
-Story
I know there's a story mode. I never played it. Nobody ever talks about it, so I'm assuming the story itself is nothing special. I'll be fair and not assign a score since I'd be talking out of my ass, but just know I'd like to give it a 0/5.
-Level Design
Decent. I can't say the levels I played on were boring or bad, but I also can't say they struck me as especially good. It was like they were given a basic idea and tried not to do anything especially interesting. I remember the level design itself being good, but I also remember every level being pretty much the same.
2/5
-Sound
Pretty good, but nothing impressive.
3/5
Averages it gets about a 4/5 (3/5 if you count the unofficial story score). But let's examine the scores. The aesthetic and sound scored well, as did the multiplayer and the core mechanics. These are all important. But the levels all run together and the gameplay is pretty cookie cutter. The most core aspects of a game, how you play it and where you're playing, fall pretty short. Objectively, I would not say this is a BAD game. I would say it's...well, a mediocre game. I'm sure most people could squeeze fun out of a few rounds, but ultimately it doesn't have a whole lot going for it aside from looking and sounding good, and using controls we're all familiar with (i.e. making you comfortable and thus making you think it's better than it is). I'm not really condemning the game but...aren't there more worthwhile things you could be playing?
In the interest of fairness, I will be giving an objective review of a game I love.
uglyrodent will now review a game he hates.
