Jay, I don't think you thought this Lost Levels thing through

I think that "helper" platforms would be much more appropriate if they were falling platforms rather than moving platforms. That way it wouldn't completely cheapen the difficulty.

I'm more eager to play SMB Special than LL. That game is just pain.

Moving platforms will solve the problem.

Do you know just how many of those we'd need for him?

Also think about the dickish placement of fire bars in that game. In Levels 7-4 and C-4 there were spots were you had to quickly jump into a hole where a fire bar would hit you if you didn't get out fast enough. In other words Jay is going to have to remove a lot of firebars or make every character move alot faster.
  6. TiagoDu Level 6: Lakitu

Most slow characters have a hassle to pass thru a clockwise-rotating firebar on a 2 blocks high corridor (Simon and Bill are the most painful).

Give all characters a jet pack = problem solved!

All jokes aside, for now it would be impossible to beat Lost Levels with any character other than Mario and Luigi, especially since the others can't stomp on enemies. So that's something Jay will have to add to the game again, or at least make it available for Lost Levels (only). I suppose that Lost Levels is going to be a separate mode!? Well, he'll have to change the rules for that mode, otherwise it won't work. I think it might be enough if he would give all the characters a double-jump and the ability to run (fast), just like Mario. Of course this would mean that those characters wouldn't behave like in their own games... but come on, Lost Levels was specifically designed for and around (the abilities of) Mario and Luigi. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate, at least not for Lost Levels. So I'm fine with every solution, as long as it makes fun to play it. :)

The amount of work that would go into adapting LL is equivalent to adding Kirby as a full character ten million times over...

I won't rest until I can pomf a fucking goomba!

Well if anyone can make it workable, it'd be Jay. If he comes back and says "Yeah, I can do this" then I am sure he has something in mind.

I really hope he does. I think that at this point, the thing that could improve SMBC most is the additional of more levels (especially harder ones), and LL is the most fitting choice.

Let's not forget VS SMB, which is a mix of those two games!
  12. TiagoDu Level 6: Lakitu

SMB has a lot of "official level packs": Lost Levels, Special, VS, this without counting some hacks that are of superior quality.
Lost Levels doesn't needs to be the first, just because it's the most knowed of them. But if jay wants to do Lost Levels, i think he thought, at least, how to adapt it to other chars

I am definitely among those who advocated for the Lost Levels, and I admit I have not played the Lost Levels thoroughly enough to realize all of the problems being listed in this thread. My advocacy came much more from a strong desire to play through different levels, rather than any affection specifically for the Lost Levels. At the top of my wishlist would be a level creator, followed closely by randomly generated levels (that obviously follow some specific rules to make each playthrough passable), and then the Lost Levels.

I strongly feel that if it will take too long or be too difficult to make the Lost Levels work for all characters, that time and energy would be far better spent on a level creator/randomly generated levels.

Or Kirby. Or adding the Shadow Skin for Ryu... 8D

I haven't played through LL recently but I think I played through it once while thinking about SMBC and it seemed alright. I'm sure I could make it work. But I don't know. We shall see.

Also I haven't read this entire thread. Just kind of skimmed it. But I think it'd be fun to play more games than just SMB, like LL and SMBS and possibly some custom levels. I just haven't gotten there yet because of my shitty level editor that I wrote back when I knew nothing about programming. But anyway if you guys say it won't work it kind of makes me want to do it more because then I'd have to be more creative about it.
  16. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

YES THAT IS EXACTLY THE RIGHT RESPONSE.
  17. TiagoDu Level 6: Lakitu

We didn't think it won't work, we just were wondering how you would make work things that seem unworkable in SMBC, like the impossible jumps. But you are a skilled man, jay, and you will have to think a lot on how some things will work on SMBC (Damn, you just made 10 characters, a skin system, many modes/difficulties and cheats, we know you're a really skilled man.)
I wish best of luck when making these levels :)

Maybe a recolour for stomp-able enemies?
Maybe those enemies having a particle effect?
