Considering Make Screw Attack break bricks too, not just enemies...

  1. Yokuro Ado Level 2: Koopa

Screw Attack seems bit too useless at times, because it's mostly used to attack enemies that are airborne (Lakitus, falling Spinies and Jumping Cheep Cheeps). It would be more useful and fun if it could break ordinary bricks IMO.

It pierces armour though, not that you'll ever manage to kill any armour other than a Bullet Bill with it lol

This could be kind of nice . . . and since Screw Attack cancels just before you land, you wouldn't have to worry about breaking the blocks you're trying to land on.
  4. Rey D Level 9: Spike Top

→ Problem is that if you do break bricks, it WILL break where you're landing. Or Jay could make the hitbox not touch what's below.

As you HAVE control on that move, I'm rather for that feature.
  5. missingman Level 1: Goomba

    Sounds good to me.

Also, I didn't know that it could destroy Bullet Bills. That's cool
  6. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

Hmm . . . if it's not too hard to implement, maybe it could break bricks going up, but not coming down?
  7. French rocks Level 3: Paratroopa

I think it's already too much powerful, so I don't think it should be able to break bricks.
  8. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

It's currently less powerful than it is in Metroid. There it could defeat any non-boss enemy in one hit. (I think that should be changed too, by the way.)
Not that the Screw Attack is really in any danger of being overpowered in SMBC, considering that it's only really practical against aerial enemies.
  9. smashbro596 Level 3: Paratroopa

i honestly think that whoever made this thread is on to something
in smbc, it feels next to useless.
it's hard to hit any ground-based enemies with it.
and.... last i checked.... didnt the screw attack break blocks in metroid as well as smash bros?
  10. Frozsoul Level 5: Spiny

    I'm all for this idea.

I don't understand why being able to break bricks with screwattack would make Samus any more powerful. I think it just makes the power-up more fun and satisfying.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the Screw Attack breaks bricks in the original Metroid.

I don't think it would make her more powerful, but I think it would be a bit strange, and perhaps even somewhat unwieldy at times. You could too easily break bricks you intended to land on, and other such scenarios are easy to imagine.
  12. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

I think steps can and should be taken to avoid the "breaking bricks you intend to land on" problem, although doesn't Screw Attack cancel just before you land anyway? I earlier suggested that it could perhaps break bricks on the way up, but not the way down.
Also, I think it's important to establish that giving a character new abilities does not necessarily make that character "more powerful". Sometimes it just improves playability, and when you have a chance to improve playability you should always, ALWAYS take it.

what if we give her the option to cancel in mid-jump? you could in some metroid games.
    (metroid II, super metroid, etc)
hey, i think its boring to follow EVERYTHING 100% about a character. there should be a bit more flexibility. XD
  14. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

Can't you already cancel it just by shooting or morphing?
And if it was in Metroid II, I think it's okay, as Samus' basic controls are based more on that game than Metroid (unless you have "Classic Samus" on).
  15. smashbro596 Level 3: Paratroopa

XD yeah. makes sense. i dont mind a FEW liberties if it is meant to enhance gameplay.
besides, sometimes, liberties do make good games (i count the american mario 2 as a good game. dont judge me!)

People who don't like that game are whiners.
Anyway, how exactly do you cancel the Screw Attack in Metroid II?

  17. smashbro596 Level 3: Paratroopa

I can answer that one. since metroid 2 was one of the first games i ever played.
you cancel it by just shooting or pressing up or down in mid-air(which also cancels any spin-jump, not just screw attack).
  18. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

Well, all of that already works in SMBC, except for pressing Down before you have the Morph Ball (of course in Metroid II, you started with the Morph Ball). Even that would be fixed if my suggestion to make midair morphing work more accurately were implemented (see this thread: http://www.explodingrabbit.com/forum/threads/samus-downward-shooting.14335/ ).
  19. Mew Level 1: Goomba

I think that the Screw Attack breaking bricks would be much more accurate and in a way, improve it. As for it breaking bricks you could land upon... this is an actual drawback to it from the actual Metroid games ; once you got it, you have to be careful not to break some of the floors that are over lava and other hazards.

On another hand, due to Samus's jump mechanics in Metroid, the Screw Attack could be cancelled if it became impractical (by pointing up/down or shooting).

I admit that at the moment, the Screw Attack is a bit impractical because Samus doesn't immediately get into spin jump mode and cancel out of it automatically when approaching the ground, making it hazardous to use except against Bullet Bills from x-3 later stages. The Screw Attack would be noticeably more practical if Samus spin jumped like in the Metroid games (going into spin jump mode the moment she got off the ground when in movement/running and getting out of it upon landing).

Overall, I think edits to the Screw Attack as alongside the Varia Suit, it really feels like one of the more underpowered/redundant power-ups in the game (I think that the Varia Suit being the Super Mushroom graphic effect would be better than becoming immune to firebars. Especially given that Samus is based off her NES template in SMBC and that the Varia Suit's function was exclusively to improve defense in the NES original as it lacked extreme heat areas, if I remember well).
  20. TheomanZero Level 7: Bloober

I suggested that the Varia Suit protect from Podoboos as well, but everyone whined . . .
Did Samus really go into Spin Jump immediately in Metroid? I thought she only did in the later games. If it was like that in Metroid, then we NEED THIS.
