Well guys, it's out now and I've beat Bowser. Here are my complaints about the game, no matter how hard it is to say these: Only four (used to think it was 3 and then I beat Coin Rush again and heard the winning tune) original compositions, the rest is remixes, even down to the final boss fight and even the credits. Nintendo's hopped onto the in-game DLC bandwagon along with Capcom, but I'm hoping that they won't toss in a bunch of level packs and call it a day... Speaking of DLC, you can get it in card form like me or get the ENTIRE GAME FROM THE NINTENDO ESHOP. I'd recommend getting it in card form cos you get a nice yellow box and it might not cost 50 euros like it does in the eShop. (Freakyforms Deluxe and the new Art Academy game are like this too) As I said, most of the music is from NSMBW. Some is from SM3DL and one track is from SMW. However, that one track from SMW is a good thing in my opinion. And the fact that they took most of its music from NSMBW means that not only did it take the bad music (if there is any), but also the good music like the swamp overworld theme. Also I found out that the Luigi trick from NSMBDS works here too. And I got 6944 coins in Coin Rush in the Mushroom Pack with normal Mario. Beat that!
Mario-Fan, I'll work on that Coin Rush score (my first run was a little over 5000, and I got Castle 2 as my last one, which sucks for coins). I've not yet beat the game (been pacing myself), but loving every bit of it. Sadly, the Mega Mushroom is even more under-used than it was in NSMBDS was. That thing is fun.
I think I found a pretty good way to grind for coins, go get a Gold Flower from a Toad house and use it in World 1-1, go to that high stack of Goombas at the end, stomp on all but the bottom one, then go off screen and stomp all but the bottom one again, rinse and repeat. It'll get you 7000 coins easily in one run of the level. Or you could just use the Gold Flower's fire ball thing to kill all of them, then go to that area in the clouds and when you get back over there the guy will have respawned so you can kill it again, I'm not sure which of these two get you the most coins in the shortest amount of time though.
Yeah, but you don't even get half that much time in Coin Rush, so I'd say maybe 2500 would be the most you can get out of it.
I had fun with a Gold Flower in I believe it is 2-3 or 2-4... got it from the random power-up block, went into the pipe that leads you to the 2nd Star Coin, where two pipes keep spawning goombas. I was bouncing off them constantly, over and over (they spawn fast enough for it), making 50 coins per bounce after the first 3. I didn't run the clock to near-breaking, but I made over 3000 coins in maybe 75 seconds.
You need to hold the B button down on every jump, so you get max height, so you don't bounce on em too fast. Edit: And lemme double-check my coin total for that level. EDIT 2: Alright, the World is 2-4. And my total was 1419 Coins, but again, I wasn't down there long (I also did this at like 3am last night, so my memory was off some). But if you can keep it going for like 200-300 seconds, you will have ALOT of coins.
I played both, but I'm not always the one to ask about opinions. If you want original compositions/3D platformer/turn into statue (you can turn into a statue in NSMB2, but in a bad way), get Mario 3D Land (I've only found four original compositions in all of NSMB2, not including jingles). If you want 2D platformer/tons of coins/upcoming DLC/flying, get NSMB2. I have never had a game over in either.
LOL So true, Mario-Fan. You will most likely never get a game over unless YOU WANT TO It's time the 1-up item get a NEW use. Nintendo, please remove the USELESS Game Over thing and give a new property for the 1-up. Like making Mario invincible for the whole stage or something.
Well you should get both, they're like obligatory. And Video Games are so much fucking cheaper in US than in Brazil, if I could get both with my own money, you can do it too right? If you can only get one for now, you should choose the gameplay you like the most (2D or 3D).
NSMB2 is a bit more retro, being pretty much a new level set, with SMB3 powers (Raccoon Tail), in all it's 2D glory, with the NSMB polished graphics. SMB3DL is more like Super Mario Galaxy-esque, though levels are timed like a traditional game. As to the whole extra-life thing... yeah. I am in World 4 of NSMB2 and got 400 lives. Deaths are few and far between, and usually my own stupid fault. Similarly, SMB3DL was a little life-heavy if you got some medium skill-level. As to a recommendation... all a matter of your playstyle love. While I love both games, I feel a bit more personal excitement with NSMB2, just cause it feels like playing Super Mario Bros 3 - Part 2.
