Varia Suit protects you from firebars. So can I posit a thought? Every single one of Samus's upgrades is pretty powerful. You've been looking at it as a whole; it isn't worth the effort of collecting EVERY power up if they're so easy to lose. But each individual power up is REALLY GOOD. Any specific item you get is a pretty big bonus (except the Screw Attack, which is merely good). So while it might be too much effort to collect EVERY item, it's completely worth it to collect ANY item. Do you see? You've been looking at it as if they are all one unit, but if you look at them as a bunch of individual bonuses it seems a lot better.
You know, maybe the Varia Suit should protect you from Podoboos, too. They're both fire-based obstacles that only appear in castle levels, so it feels appropriate.
ok: random question: (i post alot, im sorry, but i have tons of ideas!) WHY don't samus break blocks with her screw attack? or damage enemies when she lands said screw attack? It could in the metroid games...
She doesn't damage blocks because that would make the Screw Attack just a teeeeensy bit broken. As for not damaging upon landing, it might be that the programming for the Screw Attack is superceded by the programming for not being able to stomp enemies? I don't know how programming works but I'm pretty sure one can have priority over the other. Can someone with some amount of technological adeptness help out on this point?
The way Screw Attack works, even in original Metroid, it stops just short of landing on the ground, so it's very difficult to hit enemies on the ground with it. I just stick to using it for aerial enemies.
Maybe this has been talked about elsewhere, but I just discovered Samus can only collect up to 20 missiles, and I was a bit disappointed. She used to be able to hold 50. Obviously things have changed since 1.2, but I'm wondering if 20 is a bit low. She was able to get a second missile tank before, which increased her maximum. I don't know what the maximum with the second tank was, but I'm wondering, was it too high? Or has the maximum number not changed since Jay removed the second missile tank? I had assumed he removed the second tank as a redundancy and upped the normal maximum to make up for it.
I liked that he removed the Missile Expansion, as it gives one fewer item for Samus to worry about, but I agree that you should just start with the higher capacity now. You only start with two missiles anyway, so you still have to kill enemies to fill it up.
Some blocks break. Mostly was blocks that could be shot and broken, bomb blocks, or Screw Attack blocks. And you can hit enemies on the ground with Screw Attack. I've done it plenty though besides that and the flying fish I don't need Screw Attack. Space Jump should be added to make it more of an effective move.
Space Jump wasn't added until Metroid II. It'd be overkill for SMBC anyway -- shooting should still be your primary means of attack. (And yes, you can hit enemies on the ground with the Screw Attack, but most of the time, shooting them is more practical.) By the way, the mention of breaking blocks was referring to the brick blocks in SMBC, not the blocks from the Metroid games (or were you just trying to establish precedent?). It's discussed in more depth here: http://www.explodingrabbit.com/foru...tack-break-bricks-too-not-just-enemies.14541/
I know it wasn't till Metroid II but it's obvious that there is a Samus model, from II, for the game, plus there are plenty of mods out there that gave Samus the Space Jump. The only thing different with Space Jump and Screw Attack is the color (and that Screw Attack flashes and Space Jump is a continuous jump) And isn't she already overkill if you know how to use her? Once she's fully upgraded she can take on whoever she wants. Being able to jump over everything would be like being able to run on top of the ceiling in the cave levels. And I know what kind of block the post was referring to, I'm just saying that it wouldn't be "broken" as stated before since Samus already has experience breaking blocks and what not.
Samus does have a Metroid II skin, but her items are based on her NES game, just like every other character. Also, Metroid II (and later games) are non-linear exploration-based games with large rooms and vertical scrolling. SMBC is a linear platforming-based game that never scrolls vertically. An infinite midair jump would be completely wasted here.
Still. There is nothing that says it can't ever be introduced or used. The only thing it wouldn't work at really is levels with a roof. Other then that it would be fine.
Actually it would be a mite broken. This would more or less eliminate pits as an obstacle. Sure, you COULD fall in, but nobody really would. I mean...I know you'd have to find it, but it just seems a little bit OP once you do get it. And before anyone says "she is OP when she has all her weapons", I know. But this one thing, specifically, on its own, seems OP. That's just me though. I certainly can think of no reason why it SHOULDN'T be in other than the whole "based on Metroid 1" thing people have already said. And even then, I'm okay with fudging things a bit there.
Well I know I'm personally tired of falling on stuff by accident. But being able to jump can't really make her OP.... (Plus I already said about all her weapons) I mean Sophia had the hover (even if it was limited).
I can't believe Space Jump is being discussed at all. It's is obviously waaay too broken. It would grant the ability to fly over levels! You could potentially get it as early as mid 1-1, then from that point on you never even have to touch the ground. There's no way Jay would put such a thing in the game. Too broken. Far too broken.
But that's the point of the upgrade. It's also why it's an end-game upgrade too. And also why it should be a cheat since people insist that it's OP or "broken". EDIT: Or better yet, jut take out Screw Attack so Samus isn't invincible while in the air. The moment you get hit, your fucked. Plus it's not like you can go *that* high. There is still a "ceiling". Plus, if it's the last upgrade you would get then it would be harder to actually obtain. You're hit once and have to start over.
