Info for Newcomers
Before you commence in the spectacular activities we have going on here, I'd like to go over a few things.
Please note: The following is not meant to be a set of rules, we don't really like rules. This is intended to be a set of guide lines which will help everyone get along. Also included are explanations about certain things that are staples of our community, and of the creative process here at Exploding Rabbit. Please do try to read all of it!
(stop pressing buttons, you can't skip this tutorial, sorry!)
Where am I?!
This is the Exploding Rabbit discussion forum, which was originally created to talk about Exploding Rabbit projects, like Super Mario Bros. Crossover, but has grown to include many areas of interest. At the top of the main page you will see everything related to Exploding Rabbit, and the rest includes many different topics both serious and just for fun. We have a bustling community of lovely people, everyone here is more or less kind and welcoming, so please make yourself at home. Just make sure your posts and any threads you create are placed in a relevant section. If you have any feedback for the forums themselves, you can talk about it in the General Exploding Rabbit sub-forum. If you need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask in the Helping Each Other sub-forum. Just ensure that your issue hasn't already been solved in another thread, you can use the search function to figure that out.
The Exploding Rabbit Wiki
The wiki page serves to inform the general population about the various Exploding Rabbit productions, mainly Super Mario Bros. Crossover. Just like Wikipedia.org, we have in-depth articles about the game explaining a multitude of things. For example, there is a manual describing the basics of the game as a whole. But we also have specific articles for each character, there's even an article that describes the mechanical differences between SMBC and the original Nintendo Entertainment System games. The main wiki page for the game itself can be found here, with lots of links branching off to other articles.
How do I edit the wiki?
Please check the following guide for help.
I want to request a character!
Character requests are officially located in this sub-forum. It is very important that you check to make sure you're not requesting a character that has already been requested by someone else. You may notice there are different colored tabs in front of some of the thread names. These are called "Prefixes." You can browse all of the requested characters so far by clicking on the "Request" prefix. This will filter the sub-forum for you and show only request threads. It is recommended that you go one step further and use the Search function to look for Request threads with the name of the character you're interested in.
Do not make a thread only to say something similar to "I want to see this character." You should contribute a decent amount of information on your ideas for that character in the opening post to start the discussion. Following posts should expand on this, refine ideas, offer new ones, etc. The goal is to have request threads contain a plentiful amount of information and brainstorming in case Jay wants to look at them to get ideas for that character. When you are contributing to a request thread, you should pretend that you're a developer or designer brainstorming with others on how to implement the character. Threads with too much off-topic discussion, or very little relevant content and infrequent participation will be deleted.
I want to request a feature!
Feature requests are officially located in this sub-forum. It is very important that you check to make sure you're not requesting a feature that has already been requested by someone else. You can do that by searching the forum. You may notice there are different colored tabs in front of some of the thread names. These are called "Prefixes." I want to report a bug!
Bug reports are officially located in this sub-forum. Please make sure you browse this sub-forum before posting a thread for a bug you found, and make sure a thread doesn't already exist for it. If you have new information on a reported bug, don't make a new thread. Post new information in the existing thread. You may notice there are different colored tabs in front of some of the thread names. These are called "Prefixes." Clicking a prefix will filter the sub-forum for you and show only threads with that prefix. Use this to find the thread for the bug you are interested in, and to ensure that you're not posting a duplicate thread.
I want to make a skin!
You're perfectly welcome to do so. Just download the correct template, edit it in an image editing program and off you go. It is recommended that you use a colour that isn't in the sprites as the background colour if you're using a program that doesn't do transparency (like Paint). Skins are discussed and created in the appropriate thread in this sub-forum. Completed skins are submitted to the appropriate Wiki page. Jay will not put the skin in the game as soon as it's submitted, but if he and Ryuza like it, they'll put it in.
Will Jay port the game to _____?
No.
Can I download SMBC?
Yes. To be completely honest, it is possible to save a copy of SMBC to your computer, since it's a Flash object. I will not go into the details of how to do this, however. There is a reason why. Every time you visit Exploding Rabbit to play Super Mario Bros. Crossover, you're helping Jay Pavlina by generating revenue and keeping the site popular. Revenue = money. Money = the fuel of video game development. It costs money to host this website and keep it up on the internet, and Jay has made it his full-time job working on Exploding Rabbit productions. The money he makes goes back into his productions as well as paying for basic living needs.
So the answer to this question is Yes, however you are encouraged to play SMBC on this website whenever possible, to support the game's development and the growth of Exploding Rabbit. Use this link to play the game.
Can I put it on ______?
No. Please see the section above. Also, the game will not work on any other site because it has been programmed specifically to only work on explodingrabbit.com. If it is on another website, it will not work.
Will Jay give me the code?
There are no plans to release the source code for SMBC in the near future because Jay is still actively developing the game.
Before you make a new thread...
Use the "Search" function to make sure that the thread does not already exist! Many times people have started new threads about a topic, but there were threads from a little while back already discussing that topic. If you find yourself in this situation, do not make a new thread, but feel free to post in the older thread if you have anything new to add to the discussion. As a forewarning, the moderation crew will delete or lock any threads found to be duplicates. This is only done to ensure that ongoing discussions remain focused and organized, and that the forums do not become overly cluttered. If you have any questions or concerns about a deleted or locked thread, please contact a moderator.
You should make sure that the thread you are posting is relevant to the sub-forum's topic. A thread about another game you like that is similar to SMBC does not belong in the SMBC sub-forums, but it is fine to place it in one of the Gaming sub-forums. Irrelevant threads may be moved to a more appropriate place, locked or deleted.
Double Posting & Spam
Double Posting is when you post twice when you only needed to post once, bumping the thread more than it should be. This is a form of "Spam", trying to attract more attention than necessary or trying to increase your post count. In order to give everyone a fair chance at having their thoughts heard and starting a discussion, we encourage everyone to refrain from double posting. If you find yourself in a situation where you posted already, no one else has responded yet, but there is something else you want to say or add, you can "Edit" your last post instead of posting again. Look for the "Edit" button on the bottom-right of your post, it's on the gray bar.
In some cases, double posting will be allowed. For example, if you are running some sort of creative service, like a Let's Play thread or an image shop, you may double post to inform the community that you have updated after a long period of time. If it isn't a service thread, double post only if you have good reason to believe the discussion can be renewed (ex. "After the latest update, I think we now have a better idea as to what will be done with..."). You can also ask someone else to post.
We would like to remind everyone that post-counts are not a competition. Users are not judged or discriminated against because their post count is too low. Equally, users are not regarded as more important because their post-count is high. Please ensure that your posts have some amount of contribution to a discussion, and do not post for the sole purpose of raising your post count.
The moderation crew will likely merge unwarranted double posts, and clean up any posts deemed as spam. If you have any questions or concerns regarding a post that was deleted, please contact a moderator.
Exploding Rabbit does have a sub-forum specifically for spam. Do whatever the fuck you want there!! In this place, you can post and double-post to your hearts content. Posts don't need to be on-topic or anything. Just remember that posting in this sub-forum does not increase your post-count.
